Electricity and Magnetism

Grade 6

Motor

The discovery  of electromagnetism led to the development of electric motors, speakers and many other devices we use every day.

Grade 6 students each constructed a working model of an electric motor and an electromagnet.
Information about safely using these devices can be found at the Hila Science Camp projects page:  Electromagnetism

Data Management
Grade 4

Computer

Grade 4 students took part in a workshop designed to support the Data Management strand of the math curriculum. Working with samples of 50 pennies from a "penny jar", students organized the pennies by date and then created a bar graph displaying the results.    In the computer lab students entered their data into a spread sheet, Microsoft Excel.  The chart created by Excel confirmed the accuracy of their hand drawn graph.

Energy - inventing solutions!

Electrical energy from the sun is one of the technologies that will play a role in reducing our dependency on fossil fuels.  In his workshop students investigated photovoltaic cells, devices designed to directly convert sunlight into electricity.

Astronomy

Telescope

Turnbull School's location on the edge of the experimental farm makes it one of the best locations in the city for  astronomy.   On a clear night it is possible to observe planets and nebula from the school's backyard.
